According to Puranas, Goddess Parvathi made an idol of a little boy using sandalwood paste and infused life into him with her divine powers. And from the sculpture emerged a young boy who went on to address her as his mother. This is how Lord Ganesha was born.
Ganesha Chaturthi is one of the most important Hindu festivals and is celebrated to mark the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha. This auspicious festival is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Bhadrapada, the sixth month of the Hindu calendar. Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.
At the start of the festival, idols of Ganesha are placed on raised platforms. The worship begins with the pranapratishtha, a ritual to invoke life in the idols, followed by shhodashopachara, amid the chanting of Vedic hymns. The idol is anointed with red sandalwood paste, yellow and red flowers. Coconut, jaggery, laddoos, fruits and 21 modaks (sweet dumplings) are also offered as Naivedya to Lord Ganesha.
The Ganesha Chaturthi is considered complete with the visarjan vidhi. Visarjan refers to immersing the idol of Ganesha in water. The ritual symbolizing Ganesha’ s homeward journey to Mount Kailas - the abode of his parents, Shiva and Parvathi.
